Talk about a name change with character! Before becoming the "City of Warmth," Brentwood was known as Maddenville in the 1870s—named after entrepreneur Thomas Madden who ran everything from a rock quarry to a blacksmith shop. But the town got a little too "madden-ing" in the 1920s when illegal gambling houses took over. The first mayor, James Willingham, cleaned things up and the town officially became Brentwood in 1919. From Madden to glad-en, this two-square-mile city proved that good things come in small packages. Fun fact: Brentwood was ranked #1 Best Place to Live in Missouri by Niche.com in 2024!
